It sounds so odd to an English speaker to think of saying "The China" or "The France" or "Canada". So it's not the gender of the country that's so weird, it's putting the word "the" in front of the country that's so weird. And depending on which "the" you use, you can tell the gender of the country. But why use "the" in front of the country name at all??? It's not adding any new information, it's just one of those filler words that languages have that are unnecessary.
