If you get lighter roasted coffee freshly roasted and freshly ground before brewing you get a complex cup full of different notes depending on where the beans are from and their origin, for example, I have an Ethiopian from my local roasters that is full of citrus notes and not the dark bitter cups you're thinking of. From the bottom of my soul... coffee is the greatest thing to ever enter my mouth. When made right it is just so bold and powerful tasting. Fuck I love that shit. Anyway, the caffeine boost is a plus depending on the situation, the poop regulation is actually a big plus that often plays a secondary role. But ultimately, I can’t stress this enough. Coffee tastes incredible, even better than it smells... and it smells amazing. Black coffee drinker here. When I started drinking it black after drinking it with sugar for years I thought it was bitter and nasty too. After a month or so I started to actually taste the coffee and can tell the difference between blends now. There are definitely still bad coffee blends that just taste like hot/bitter water, but that’s cheap diner-type coffee.
