At any rate, it was a dumb thing to say to OP's wife, and OP is decidedly NTA for standing up for her. Because even if OP's sister's intention wasn't to cause hurt, she did. The appropriate response there on her part would be something like "That wasn't how I meant it; I know how hard taking care of kids is! I was venting frustration that she has options I don't, but shouldn't have vented at her. I'm really sorry I made her think that." I think she's genuinely puzzled and curious about your wife's decision to be a SAHM because I think from your sister's perspective if she had half of your wife's intelligence she'd pursue a career. If anything I think she envious of your wife's intellect. You and your wife have made a decision that's working well for your family, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. I think you and your wife should talk to your sister about how her comments made your wife feel instead of cutting off her access to childcare without giving her enough time to find an alternative.
