They also cost a freaking fortune, but if you paid the equivalent of $2000 in 2020 money for a stove back then, it would last you 20 years with minimal maintenance. Nothing lasts "forever," but nowadays you pay about 1/4 the price, get about two or three years of use, then encounter insurmountable issues with reparability including: nonstandard parts, lack of maintenance access, rivets where there should be screws, low-gauge heating elements, bad soldering, shitty thin wiring, bad insulation, and literal software DRM. Things are gonna break, and when they do, there will NOT be maintenance parts available, if you can even get to the part that needs work, without destroying the appliance.
