The source for a lot of the weird "rules" of English that native speakers don't really care about (like not ending a sentence on a preposition, or not splitting infinitives) were made up in the 18th century based on how Latin grammar worked. The result of forcing the grammar of one language family into the grammar of another is a bunch of sentences which (some, old-fashioned) grammarians insist is more technically correct, but which sounds weird and clumsy to native speakers.
